Since the topic of climate change is urgent and the militaristic language used to explain an environmental crisis is in circulation, the research in question examines the impact of these kinds of metaphors on social usage and participation in relation to climate change. It was done through the discourse analysis methodology applied in the investigation of the chosen texts of the international climate change reports, media articles, and political speeches. Results are indicative of metaphors of war framing climate change as an enemy to emphasize the urgency and stimulate action, as well as aiding in the development of narratives of conflict, which detracts from the availability of a shared solution. The report showcases the mental processes of the war metaphors and what they can do to the perception of climate change in the minds of the society. The results of this analysis are valuable to the growing literature regarding the use of metaphors in environmental speech, but also provides novel information regarding the use of language in forming the vision of global crises.
2025-09-03T19:50:36+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of English Studies Dialogue (JESD)https://www.thejesd.com/index.php/jesd/article/view/6PRONOUN CHOICE IN NON-BINARY ENGLISH SPEAKERS: IDENTITY AND SYNTAX IN NATURAL SPEECH2025-09-03T19:52:03+00:00Riyasat Farooq Naqvifarooqnaqvi@gmail.com
The research paper studies the syntactic and identity dimension of pronoun selection with non-binary speakers of the English language, whose belonging to the linguistic structures corresponds to their gender identity. The study deals with ambiguous relationship between linguistic norms, the identity of the individual and social expectation regarding non binary use of language. This paper identifies trends in the choice of pronouns and syntax so far used by non-binary individuals in different social situations through the analysis of natural speech data. The results indicate that the pronoun preference of non-binary speakers is related both to self-perception of gender self-expression and to strategies to relate to social systems that construct language. Also, the paper identifies the obstacles and possibilities in modifying traditional English syntax to capture the gender diversity. The article is relevant to general knowledge on how language reflects, reinforces and negotiates gender identities, providing an insight into dynamically flowing gender-neutral language.

2025-09-03T19:52:03+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of English Studies Dialogue (JESD)https://www.thejesd.com/index.php/jesd/article/view/3POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN DOCTOR-PATIENT CONVERSATIONS: A CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISON BETWEEN THE US AND JAPAN2025-09-03T19:53:35+00:00Shehenshah Palejo Palejo454@gmail.com
This study explores how politeness is achieved in the context of doctor-patient dialogue in the context of the two cultural groupings namely the United States and Japan. The need to be polite is an important feature of communication, which is especially important in the context of the healthcare environment, because the rules of interaction between people are controlled by power and cultural conventions. This paper employs discourse analysis to explore how the processes of politeness in the US and Japanese help the doctor and patient preserve social harmony, be respectful and deal with face. Using the recorded communications between doctors and patients in both countries, the research determines how directness, pleasant niceties, and hierarchical deference were used in both countries. The analysis of the findings shows that the maintenance of respect is valued in both cultures, however the US culture is rather egalitarian and less formal, whereas Japan, on the other hand, is characterized by hierarchy and indirect manner of communication. This research can help to understand how cross-cultural communication influences healthcare processes and what kind of influence cultural norms can have on designing communication strategies.

2025-09-03T19:53:35+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of English Studies Dialogue (JESD)https://www.thejesd.com/index.php/jesd/article/view/2STANCE MARKING IN COVID-19 TWEETS: A DISCOURSE-PRAGMATIC APPROACH2025-09-03T19:55:04+00:00Zafar Iqbal Khosa khosazafariqbal@gmail.com
This paper discusses the discourse-pragmatic stance marking in COVID-19 related tweeting. Twitter as a dynamic form of public communication may enable the user to share personal opinion, beliefs and attitude especially in times of global crises. Stance, which constitutes the materialization of speakers assessment, emotionality, or stance toward a topic, is important in the way that users participate in the discourse of the pandemic. The present paper corpus-analyses a display of COVID-19 tweets through the prism of a discourse-pragmatic approach in order to look at the range and purposes of the stance marking, as well as hedging markers (such as, hedges, intensifiers, evaluative language). Analysis shows that the COVID-19 tweets that have been marked with stances differ considerably based on the context with a great difference on various topics such as government responses, health policies, and the conversations about the vaccines. The present work is useful in addressing the construction of stance in social media discourse in the context of a global crisis and the opportunities it creates in forming the opinion of the population and dissemination of information. The research covers a gap in the literature since it studies the pragmatics of stance of pandemic-related tweets.
2025-09-03T19:55:04+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of English Studies Dialogue (JESD)https://www.thejesd.com/index.php/jesd/article/view/5SWEARING AND SOCIAL BONDING IN MALE FRIENDSHIP PODCASTS: A SOCIOPRAGMATIC ANALYSIS2025-09-04T20:14:14+00:00Maria BatoolBatool_maria_khatoon@gmail.comJan Zari Zari9@gmail.com
This paper examines how swearing can be used to create social bond between the male companions in situations of friendship podcasts. Over the last ten years, podcasts became a prominent means of discussing the processes of the social world, with male friendship often being characterized by a specific use of language. In particular, a sociopragmatic perspective is utilised in the present paper to examine the ways in which swearing can be a resource used to achieve intimacy alongside establishing a group identity as well as conversational fluidity within male friendship podcasts. The study relies on a body of work of five top-rated male-hosted friendship podcasts to conclude on the frequency, nature, and social functions of swear words through the concept of discourse analysis. In the research, it is revealed that the practice of swearing is a versatile means of communication: it identifies solidarity, minimizes the social distance, and occasionally relieves the tension in conversations. NewswearingIn this paper, we contribute to knowledge on swearing in non-aggressive, ordinary social situation and to pragmatics of swearing in male-dominated discourse communities.
2025-09-04T20:14:14+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of English Studies Dialogue (JESD)
